Maryknoll Pine Removed
Public Safety Ensured

Sister Jeanne Houlihan, Regional Representative of the Maryknoll Sisters, said today (6 February 2010), "Removal of the pine tree was completed about 9 o'clock today."

For the safety of students, teachers and the public, Maryknoll Convent School had decided to remove the pine tree towering above the school campus. Risk of collapse is particularly acute in inclement weather.

In the course of removal, the tree removal contractor noted part of the trunk to be infested with fungus, with signs of decay, and to emit strong stench.

Sister Jeanne further stated, "The pine tree has been removed and with it, the risk to public safety. I am well aware how deeply our students and staff love and cherish that tree; so do the Sisters. However, safety is, and has always been, our prime concern. We have had no choice but to take the painful decision for its removal.

"Throughout, we have been keeping our students and teachers, Former Students Association and Parent-teacher Association closely posted. We have clearly explained the reasons for our decision with relevant information for their understanding. Many many parents have given strong support to the school in this matter. Indeed, alumnae, both local and worldwide, have expressed support as well," Sister Jeanne concluded.

Mrs. Helen Yu, alumna of the Maryknoll Convent School and Supervisor of its Primary Section, said, "The school authorities will continue to conserve the trees, the fauna and flora in the school campus, to give our students a quality environment for learning."

The school will select a suitable site in the campus to plant a new tree during the Homecoming of the alumnae for our 'Worldwide Reunion' on 19 February.

The Maryknoll Sisters and the school management appreciate Government's facilitating this removal works.
